The following is the award-winning essay Seamus Flynn wrote:
Does Patriotism Still Matter?
What is the definition of patriotism? What does it mean to me? And, most importantly, does it still matter what happened all these years later? These are the questions that pop into my head as I read or hear the word patriotism. Well, now I am writing an essay answering these questions, which will not just give me new knowledge, but it will give you some too.
What is the definition of patriotism? That was the first question I asked myself. Patriotism is officially defined as national loyalty, or to defend one's country. You may ask yourself, "What does this mean?" It means always siding with your country, fighting for your country, etc, etc,
What does patriotism mean to me? To me, patriotism means siding with your country through the good and the bad, the hard and the easy. Anyone who shows true patriotism is a true man or woman of their country. It's important to show patriotism because you need to prove your loyalty to where you live.
Does patriotism still matter? Yes, it sure does! Without patriotism we would have no rights because we lost all of our wars. Without patriotism, there would be no police force to protect people. Our whole country would be run down, unprotected, and ungoverned. This would happen because without patriotism, no one would be doing jobs that help protect our country and the people that live in it.
I have learned that patriotism means national loyalty. I learned what it means to me. Most important of all, I learned that patriotism still matters because if we didn't have it, our country would be run down and worthless. Writing this essay has made me realize that it's not enough to love our country; you have to serve it in some way. It can by anything, as long as you do something to help our country.
