Teaching students to give to people in need is part of the mission at St. Joseph School and during the month of November it was put into practice in a fruitful way. During the weeks before Thanksgiving, St. Joseph School students assisted the St. Joseph Parish Food Pantry deliver 50 baskets for local families in need. Every grade was in charge of contributing food items from a list provided after which the 8th grade class sent them to Food Pantry Coordinator, Sr. Janine Blanchard. Once there, the students, Sr. Janine and some of her many Parish volunteers like Dick Trudeau and Bob Monahan (TEEG - Thompson Ecumenical Empowerment Group volunteer and St. Joseph Church Eucharistic Minister) helped load the food onto trucks. The fifty baskets were among the 190-200 baskets that will be handed out to local families.
The St. Joseph Parish Food Pantry is among many local businesses and churches that help fill the baskets for TEEG. United Natural Foods, St. Stevens Church, Act II Ministries, Thompson Congregational Church, Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Eastford Baptist Church also donate money and food for this worthy cause.
TEEG Community Service Manager, Stacy Rodecap, was thankful for all that had been provided and added, " We've been able to keep up with the increased need because of the generosity of the community," which sounds like a modern day case of "loaves and fishes" put into practice.
Thank you TEEG and Sr. Janine for letting the young students experience the spirit of giving and being part of the community. It allowed them the chance to put into practice what they learn everyday at St. Joseph School.
