Catholic School Week at St. Joseph School (SJS) in North Grosvenordale got heated this week with a Can Drive for the St. Joseph Food Pantry. What started as an innocent way to fill the coffers of the food pantry blossomed into a full-fledged war between two opposing baseball teams. Principal Sharon Briere, a devoted Red Sox fan, and Athletic Director Kevin Boligan, a devoted Yankee fan, came up with an idea on how to collect the most food items. After every 100 items, Mrs. Briere had to wear either a Red Sox item or a Yankee item, depending on whose team collected more. This snowballed into a record number of food items collected with the original goal of 1,500 surpassed by 50 items.
Kevin Boligan added, "It was great to see the SJS community come together for such a great cause. Sharon took it all in good spirit and it was fun to egg her on in her Yankees attire. The kids got a real kick out of it especially on Friday at lunch when they were cheering and booing when she mentioned Yankees or Red Sox. I can't wait until the next one."
All of this was a boon to Food Pantry Coordinator Sr. Janine Blanchard of the St. Joseph Food Pantry and she welcomed the abundance of canned goods.
Grade 8 students helped deliver the items to the food pantry.
The good natured foes wearing each other teams' shirts and hats. You can tell Principal Briere could barely hold that sign up.
