Sunday, September 23, 2007

On a bright sunny Sunday morning, a steady stream of motorcycles rolled into the Thompson Town Hall Parking lot for 3rd Annual St. Joseph School Motorcycle Run. This event benefits the students of St. Joseph School in North Grosvenordale, CT. The first part of the day included a blessing of their motorcycles given by Father Mike Phillippino, Pastor of St. Joseph Church in North Grosvenordale, CT. After the blessing, each cyclist hopped on their bikes for a 70 mile mystery trip with three stops along the way. Each participant had a chance to win prizes from different motorcycle dealers in the area with their best and worst poker hand. After the ride was completed, the 23 bikers feasted on the delectable chicken BBQ at the Knights of Columbus and found out if they won for best and worst poker hand. Gift certificates and t-shirts donated by area motorcycle dealers were among the prizes. Scott Antonson, Event Coordinator said, “Everyone that attended told me that they had a great time and plan on coming back next year. I consider that a successful day of events.”

Ray and Annette Dewey from North Grosvenordale, CT were among the cyclists who enjoyed the sparkling September day. They are veteran motorcycle run participants, who have been doing these runs for over 25 years. With their three wheeled Honda Goldwing “trike” beside them, they described the best parts of a motorcycle run: the camaraderie, giving to charity, and their love of the open road.

Another couple, Donna and Glenn Dumas from Putnam, CT, have been doing motorcycle runs for two years. They like to have their bike blessed and also feel good about doing something positive for their community.

St. Joseph School Principal Sharon Briere was there to welcome the attendees and remarked that she is “greatly appreciative to all the parents and friends who volunteered.” Father Mike added, “I want to thank all those who helped to bring this motorcycle run together and for their commitment to the school and to Catholic Education.”

Along with the ride, the motorcyclists had a chance to purchase raffle tickets for a 2007 Harley Davidson Sportster. The drawing for the bike was held on the night of the 3rd Annual St. Joseph School Oktoberfest at the Knights of Columbus located at Rt. 12, N. Grosvenordale, CT on Saturday, October 6, at 6 pm.. This year, the Saint Joseph School Community was able to sell 572 of the 800 tickets that were printed. The increase in ticket price and sales contributed to the success of this event. The two events raised over $8,400 for St. Joseph School.

Thanks to everyone who gave of their time and talent during these fundraisers.
